Because I am breastfeeding I prefer not to use any OTC medications. I have been looking into herbal remedies and have some questions about them.
"# Steam treatments:
* Boil a pot of water, remove from the stove and (optional) add a few drops of essential oils (for example: eucalyptus, sage and balsam). Drape a bath towel over your head and breathe deeply for 5 minutes. do this 2 or 3x a day until symptoms subside.
* put two inches of apple cider vinegar in a pan and heat until it begins to steam. Inhale the vapor. If the vapor is too strong, add a little water. Repeat as needed.
Drink hot lemonade with honey. Or make a mixture of one part lemon juice and two parts honey. Sip throughout the day."
I have Lavender Oil at home which is used for aromatherapy… would that work for the steam treatment and if not, what essential oil can I get at Wal-Mart since everything else is closed? also, how much honey would I place in a cup of hot lemonade? and would hot apple cider be good or is that just not good enough?
The link suggests apple cider vinegar "Apple-cider vinegar and water gargle. Mix 1-6 teaspoons (1/3 – 2 tablespoons) vinegar in a glass of water; you can mix it as strong as you can stand it. Gargle one mouthful (swallow afterward or spit it out). Repeat twice. do this every hour, or as needed. " but I'm not trying that crap lol I hate gargling.
good luck to you.
I am alergic to almost ever OTC there is. it can make me deathly ill.
What's Ive been doing the past three years is tuff it out and sleep as much as possible. Three days it goes away.
Hope you do not suffer too much.
a really good gargle is water with salt or lemon juice with salt. those worked great for me.
as for the boiling pot of water, you can breathe deeply without the oils, it works just as great.
i wouldn't suggest ingesting too much apple cider vinegar because it think it is a bit strong.
you can make a cupful of hot lemonade and add 2-3 tablespoons of honey (doesn't taste very well, i can tell you that) and drink it.
hope this helps…no matter what you do though, i learned in my health and illness class that a cold usually subsides on its own about 7 days from the day it started because it is viral, so all the remedies you seek are pretty much to aleviate the symptoms, not to get rid of it.
good luck and hope you feel better.
I am also nursing and didn't want to take any OTC meds. the Sudacare Shower Soothers really helped.
There is a homeopathic remedy called cold Calm.
When Lilah got a mild cold at 2 months, I took Oscillococcinum (homeopathic for flu symptoms) so it could get through to her via my breast milk. I didn't know the cold Calm even existed or I would have taken that one.
This was suggested by our chiropractor, who also practices homeopathy. after taking the Oscillococcinum for 2 days, her cold was gone.
Point being, it would be safe for your daughter if you were to take it. It's completely natural. I know you can get Oscillococcinum at the grocery store or Walmart, but ours doesn't have cold Calm. You can probably get it at a health food store though. We only have one tiny one b/c our town is so small and they didn't carry it.
Other than that, the things you listed above are great. Eucalyptus oil is wonderful and also natural.
Good luck and I hope you get rid of that nasty cold soon!
